Edmonton Local Business marketing

More on Edmonton Local Business Marketing SEO

It is becoming the norm for people in communities like Edmonton Canada or Stockton California to find what they need with a mobile phone. This creates two unique problems. Current data suggests that within a couple of years more searches will be conducted online for small businesses and local businesses with a mobile phone than with a desk top computer!

The problems created are twofold;
1. Your small business needs to be found first.
2. Your small business website must be mobile friendly.

Addressing point number 1:

If you are a Local small business, the search engine optimization that you use needs to be tailored to Local small Business SEO. You are primarily after the places site returns rather than the organic results, although you need to structure your SEO packages to actually do both, but local business SEO first. Google places returns are placed on the SERP page one results ABOVE the organic results, and that is exactly where you want to be located, and hopefully in the top 5 of those results.

I have several posts on the art of Local business SEO, but I can add a couple of new tips here. The beauty of LOCAL is the word local. Any site which exists within your local area, such as an online news letter, an online blog with a local address, online newspapers, are great places to go get a direct link to your business website! Notice, I am discussing links here, not citation sites, where only the mention of your business name, address, phone number or email address counts. If you have a local classified ad site, place a small business advertising ad into it to get that link. Focus local, local did I say local links?

Addressing issue 2:

Now, I ask you, if you are wanting to purchase a new mega wide screen TV, and you are in your car with a mobile phone, trying to find a location to purchase one and a website for a retail TV store opens on your mobile phone and you can only see a tiny part of the website without both horizontal and vertical scrolling, are you going to stay on that site to try to find the street address? I wouldn’t, I want my providers to make life ease for me and provide that information in mobile format, complete with a click to call button!

Summary

To be a successful in small business marketing you need to conduct an adequate campaign of local business or small business SEO and have a good mobile website.

Small Business Marketing Online and the Need for Citations in Local SEO

Well, the input from the last post was informative, and deserved! If I list about 100 citation sites that need to be administered in small doses, guess what the largest volume of questions were about? Not rocket science right? The question is, ok, which ones first?

Sorry, I should have taken the time to give a hint at this, and I will list my favorite 20 in this post. You decide which to do first. After that, I do not think that the order in which the references to your business appear is important, they will all count.

I am going to list my top 20 favorites, and I do not think that the order in which they appear is all that important.

Local Business Online Advertising

Local Business Online Advertising and the Need for Citations in Local SEO

Local Business SEO is all about getting the Places slots on page one of a SERP. These are extremely important, as at least on Google, they appear ahead, or above the organic listings. They are so important, that they can replace the need to obtain great page one organic listings, saving lots of time and money.

Citations are defined as “mentions” of your business name and address on other web pages. These “mentions” are important to the search engines even if there is no link to your website. Mention of your business address and name in a classified ad are also citations.

Online yellow pages directory where your business is listed would also be a form of a citation. Citations also arise from a local chamber of commerce, or a local business association where your business information can be found, even if they are not linking to your website. “Web references” is a synonym for “citations”.

Citations are a key component of the ranking algorithms of the major search engines. Other factors being equal, businesses with a greater number of citations will probably rank higher than businesses with fewer citations. This is important, as you want your website to be in the top 10 places, so that it appears ON the page, not as a continuation of the Places websites.

In the following link, I have given you a list of citation sites deemed the best by Mike Wilton.
The Ultimate List of Local Citation Sites
Written by Mike Wilton

As I have written before, it is important to be very careful to insure that the very same, or EXACT business contact information is used uniformly across all citation sites. It is also important, that you first get your search engine places pages in place before you start building the citations.

Also, as I have mentioned many times in the past, you want to build these citation listings very slow, just a few a week. One note of caution, there are several black hat software programs that will do this kind of work for you, making it possible to do them all in a few seconds or minutes. Don’t even think about it. This could get your entire website blacklisted on the search engines and it will never be found.

Please take the time to read Mike Wiltons page above, as it contains great information that doesn’t need to be repeated here.

Small Business Online Advertising

Small Business Internet Advertising

In this article I want to bring forward two simple tools that you can use to get a start on local business advertising and marketing keyword analysis. Below, I have assembled a status of where the SEO is at the current time for the Crazyfoxes small business online advertising and marketing website.

The titles in the table below are Keyword string, Google (the SERP rank obtained todate), VolumeG (Global search volume), VolumeL (Local search volume) and Comp (the number of competing websites that have the exact phrase in their title tag)

Keyword String—————-Google—-VolumeG—VolumeL—-Comp

business advertising————–50——–246000—–110000—-1.7 M
business marketing—————-**——-246000—–110000—-5.0 M
business marketing online——–16———40500——-18100—-175 K
business advertising online——-14———14800——–6600—-230 K
local business marketing———-73———14800——–8100—-832 K

local business advertising———24———-3600——–1900—-879 K
local business online advertising–14———–260———140——46 K
local business online marketing—34———-1900———720——54 K
online business advertising———5———14800——-6600—–470 K
online business marketing———-2———40500——18100—–588 K
small business online marketing—-5———-4400——-2400—–206 K
small business online advertising—7———-1600——-1000—– 47 K
small business marketing———109———90500—–40500—–2.0 M
small business advertising———10———18100——12100—-125 K
small business internet Marketing–62——–12100——–6600—–90 K
small business internet advertising-16———–800———720——5 K

This illustration is by no means meant to be a tutorial on the subject of keyword selection, there will be more on that in later posts. To get the Global and Local volumes I use the Google Keyword tool, https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.

The Competition was obtained in each case by going to the Google search engine and typing, intitle:”Keyword String”, into the search field and reading the number of competing websites that have that phrase in the title tag of the webpage. “M” stands for Million and K stands for thousand.

As you can imagine, it would take a very long time to get the Keyword string, “business Marketing”, without the quotes, to page one of a Google search, it having a competition of 5 million sites! Business Advertising with 1.7 million competition is also an awesome competitive string. You might ask, then, why is this site already at 50? Well, when we started to promote this site over a year ago, it did not even show, as, “business advertising” is not even now showing.

The SERP ranking of 50 is primarily because of all the effort that has already gone into promoting the keyword strings that are already on page one of the SERP; online business advertising(5), small business online advertising(2), small business online advertising(7), small business advertising(10) and the promotion of other long tail keyword strings such as small business internet advertising(16) which are not yet on page one.

The general strategy that I use when starting to promote a new site is to do enough keyword research to find longtail kayword strings some of which are listed above, with lower search volumes, but low or no competition. This will bring you some early hits, and at the same time start building up your high competition, high volume keyword strings, as has happened here.

Notice, that the string, small business internet advertising, only has a SERP rank of 16, even though there are only 5000 competing pages. That is because that string went unnoticed in the early stages and was not promoted. It will get some promotion in this article, see if you can find it.

Local Business Online Advertising and Marketing

Local Business Online Advertising and Marketing

Local Business SEO

One of the most important things to do as a local business, to increase your visibility on the internet is to secure a Google places website, and to then fully optimize it. You can find your site and claim it, or you can simply build a new one or hire someone to build it for you. In the building process, make sure that your physical address, phone number and email address are the same as you listed them in the local telephone directory. This is very important, as if there are discrepancies, you may lose Google visibility because of that.

Be sure to take advantage of all of the options during the places page setup, uploading the allowed material such as photos and videos. Be sure to use alt tags on your photos.

Either create or hire someone to create a facebook page, Bing Local, and yahoo local listings.

Next, get your small business listed in all of the local directories in your area.

Now establish a linkedin account and post some content there that links to your business website.

Establish a connection between your business and classified ads by posting an ad on Craig’s list, making sure that all of the contact information is the same as your business.

These simple actions will go a long way to start your work of local search engine optimization. One additional very important step for all local business or small businesses is to get a mobile website made for you. Google understands to coming avalanche of local business and small business mobile marketing, and will reward your business well for getting this job, which Google believes is a necessary part of small business marketing.

Small Business Advertising and marketing SEO Techniques

Beginning Series On Client Small Business Advertising SEO

I am starting a series of articles on the process to get your small business advertising or local business advertisingclients page to page one of a SERP, Search engine results page.

The very first thing to do with the Clients Small or local business marketing website is to check the content for duplicate content. There is no point in working with a client who has simply borrowed content from other people’s websites. Duplicate content can cause keyword search results to be listed in “other results”. There are times, however, when your Clients site may be ending up in the “other search results, category”, because others have borrowed snippets of your clients code for descriptions, or title tags, or other content, and Google mistakenly thinks that those snippets are the original content, and downgrades your clients page to the secondary search results because of that.

In this event, the best course of action is to have your client rewrite their content, to insure that it is all fresh and original. Then recache the client’s webpage. You can do this by pinging the page at pingler.com and pinggoat.com. Check from time to time to see that it has been cached. A second way is to post links on high traffic sites such as blogs and forums, that are getting fresh content every day. Spiders, out of necessity, usually live on those sites, and if that site has “do follow” links, your clients site will get indexed, creating a new cache.

Adding your link to websiteoutlook.com, will insure that your site gets indexed promptly as well. Finally, adding your link to bookmarking or aggregator sites will assist getting your clients local business site indexed as spiders frequent these sites frequently.

Local Business ON-Page SEO

The next most important aspect of on-page optimization is to complete the following checklist.

Have a principal keyword for this page
If the keyword is not in the domain, insure that it is in the URL
Make sure that the Title contains the keyword
Insure that there are H1, H2, H3 tags with the keyword
Put the keyword into the first sentence
Put the keyword into the last sentence
Make the keyword density more than 2%
Place an image on the page with an alt tag containing the keyword
Make the content 500 words or longer
Use bold, italic and underline for the keywords

Three Very Important Page Criteria

It will not do you much good if you do not properly prepare a page for upward mobility to page one of a SERP, ands no end of back links may do the job on a poorly prepared page. The elimination of duplicate content and strict attention to the above checklist factors are critical. Perhaps, even more critical are paying attention on how to optimize the following three factors:

Click Thru Rate
Bounce Rate
Visitor Retention

Local Business SERP Click Thru Rate

This is how fast visitors click the page on a SERP. The factor that you control that influences this the most is the Meta Description. You want to make this as attractive as you can, so that no matter where you may be listed on a SERP page, you will be clicked first. Copywriting skills are great here as you need to remove worry, provide reliable on spot information, provide promising information, and give the impression that this site has the answer to my search question. Also a good place for the site URL in many cases, and the keyword phrase needs to be in the description up front at least once.

Remember, the search engines are striving to END THE SEARCH!

Bounce Rate for a Clients Local Business Advertising and Marketing Site

When a searcher clicks on your SERP result and immediately hits the back button or leaves the site, this is bad. The repulsion is probably do to the fact that the searcher failed to find the result that he or she was looking for. However, if they stay awhile and browse a bit, Google thinks that your site has been helpful and may even consider an upgrade.

Visitor Retention on your Local business marketing Client Site

Whatever you can do to keep a visitor on your site for a long time will suit you well. Videos do that, interesting titles that must be clicked on to bring one to another area of the site help, images which are attractive and or helpful. Imagine what a 3 to 5 minute great video could do for you. A link to related content at the bottom of the page sometimes increases visitor retention as well.

Summary

Good on page SEO, fast CTR, low bounce rate and good retention time are prerequisite to driving a Clients local business advertising and marketingsite to page one of a SERP.

Small Business Advertising and Marketing Tools

Keyword Selection Tool for small business online Advertising

I am a subscriber of acquiring good tools as soon as I can afford them. My main SEO promotion tool is the Veretekk Platinum Marketing System. This set of tools which allows me to systematically generate backlinks, which ultimately place my websites and the websites of my clients on page one of Google and the other search engines. It is the premier system for dealing with multiple clients. If you are in the local business niche, it will become a necessity for you. It is so valuable as it places similar functions that you must do for each client each day, under one dashboard, so to speak. Your daily functions are then automated.

Small Business Key Word Selection

The biggest problem with marketing on the internet comes in selecting the keywords that a person needs to promote. They must have adequate volume, to enable traffic to flow constantly to the target website. They must not be too competitive, which will allow conscientious promotion of those keywords to page one of a Search Engine Results Page (SERP) in a reasonable time. This is the most important first step of any marketing campaign. It will do you or your client no good to promote keywords to page one of a SERP which have no traffic, and it will not help you our your client to spend hundreds of hours promoting keywords that are so competitive that you will not achieve page one of a SERP in a reasonable time.

Google’s keyword tool is a good place to start, just Google it. It will give you global and local search volumes and relative competition. But when you need to settle in to “which” keywords, you are well advised to purchase Market Samurai. I do not have an affiliate link for that, so I will not be making any money if you take my advice and go get it. For your convenience, I refer you to this YouTube video. local business marketing.

Your Questions About Marketing A Local Business Online

Sandra asks…

Why do Conservative districts consume the most PORNOGRAPHY, could this explain why “Nailn Palin” is so popular?

Porn in the USA: Conservatives Are Biggest Consumers

8 of Top 10 Porn-Consuming States Voted Republican in 2008 Presidential Election
By EWEN CALLAWAY
Feb. 28, 2009

Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography.

A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states.

“When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different,” says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

“Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by,” Edelman says.

Political Divide
Edelman spends part of his time helping companies such as Microsoft and AOL detect advertising fraud. Another consulting client runs dozens of adult websites, though he says he is not at liberty to identify the firm.

That company did, however, provide Edelman with roughly two years of credit card data from 2006 to 2008 that included a purchase date and each customer’s postal code
After controlling for differences in broadband internet access between states – online porn tends to be a bandwidth hog – and adjusting for population, he found a relatively small difference between states with the most adult purchases and those with the fewest.

The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. “The differences here are not so stark,” Edelman says.

Number 10 on the list was West Virginia at 2.94 subscriptions per 1000, while number 41, Michigan, averaged 2.32.

Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year’s presidential election – Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama.

Wow, that’s amazing. I had no idea conservatives liked sex.

Helen asks…

What do you think of my story?

I realize that this is pretty long. But could you tell me what you think and how i could improve it?

Before my dad left, he owned the local car mechanics, carrying on the business after his dad as soon as he left high school, and after years of hard work he managed to make the business the best car shop for miles around.
Him and my mom first met when she needed a car repair, nothing too bad, an easy fix but he instantly fell in love with her. Telling her that it was a hard job and took time just so he could see her that ‘one last time’. If you asked him about it, he’d insist it was because they had a natural chemistry. That he couldn’t help but feel that they had something in common. A feeling that something big was going to happen. To both of them. That they were meant to be together.
Of course, it turned out that they were polar opposites. She was fresh out of college with a medical degree and had already found herself a job in a hospital close by. And all he had was his car shop, ’Hunter’s Auto Repair’. In the end, she made a complaint about her car taking too long to get fixed, making him explain everything. And somewhere in the midst of it all, They fell in love. They were the perfect couple: he was all charm and fun and everyone’s favorite guy to buy a beer. And she was a workaholic that saw the ‘bigger picture’ in everything she did. And that worked for them, for some reason.
Our town is called Wild Ridge and is famous for nothing other than being that town that isn’t big enough to be anything special and not small enough to go un-noticed. It’s in the middle of nowhere and the only reason people who aren’t locals come here is for the ocean that’s about a one walk from anywhere you go without passing the carved signs that bracket our town, lined in yellow paint: Welcome to Wild Ridge – A Neighbourhood Of Friends.
The only other distinguishing characteristics of Wild Ridge was the hospital, where my mom worked and the thunder storms that we got, that always seemed to be worse here than anywhere else.
My dad loved this about our town; he spent most evenings, when the weather was bad, out on the back porch, looking up excitedly at the sky as the distant rumblings got louder and louder, closer and closer, until claps of lighting would burst out overhead before pouring the rain down over everyone, seeming powerful and heavy enough to sweep us along with it.
It drove my mom crazy though. Meaning that whenever it rained she was temperamental until it ended and the sun came back, but my dad revelled in it. To me, it was something normal. I hardly stirred, even when I slept, as the glass in my windows shook with the house.
My dad’s family business was a hit, he’d advertise all over town. Running through the basic conversation with everyone, tweaking it a little depending on what sort of people they were: He showed off his knowledge and reliability to passers through and talked NASCAR and barbecues with the locals. Of course you wanted him to fix your car. Hell, you wanted him to be your best friend. My dad always saying that it was the key to success. And my mom agreed, helping out with the selling on a regular basis. My mom job was to move in with the technical information, leaving the hard selling up to my dad. She even cut back her hours drastically at the hospital to help out more with his business. She said it was the future.
Until my little sister died.

Oh yeah, don’t give me shit about it being put up on the internet for people to steal because i already realize that and i’m only writing this for fun at the minute.

Thanks.

admin answers:

Not engaging at all. I read a few paragarphs, started skimming, and finally stopped reading. It’s all backstory. Start 1) with the present and 2) as close as possible to the point when your character’s life starts spinning out of control.

No one cares about how his mom and dad met. If it’s important to the story then weave it in in later chapters (don’t info dump like you’re doing now).

Always start with some kind of action, conflict, or tension if you want to grip the reader and keep them reading. Any action should be related to the plot, so don’t have a fight scene just to have a fight scene. It would be pointless.

Hi, I tried to help you with editing the cover letter. I think that it would be advisable to adda personal touch, such as,
I am detail-oriented, and have great organizational skills. Try to research what skills you would need and see where that meets the skills you have. There needs to be more that just your experience. You can do a google search for “cover letter example” and see what format is used.

Good luck!

Lisa asks…

Is this a good argumentative speech?

I wrote this in about 7 hours and I need to know if this is a good speech or if there is anything I should change or fix. The Subject is Censorship, and I am arguing against censorship. So Please give me your honest opinion. (Sorry for my messy grammer/spelling it’s 2:39.)

Censorship effects us all, be it through race, religion, government party or income. Everyone in this room will be effected by censorship one way or another.

There are so many types of censorship: Moral, Military, Religious, Political, Corporate and Creative just to name a few.

Corporate Censorship is when media outlets intervene to stop the publishing of information that may depict their business or business associates in an adverse light. Privately owned corporations that report news also can refuse to share information that may cause loss of advertiser revenue or shareholder value which negative publicity may bring.

The Telecommunications Act is a law that Canadian telecommunications common carriers like Telus, Bell Canada and Verizon are regulated. The Telecommunications act at the time was not favored by the media. Records show that there were only 12 major news stories about the Telecommunications act and a total of 19.5 minutes of air time accumulated over those stories.

Much of the coverage of the new act was centered around the television content ratings and the V-chip while the considerable changes to the ownership rules of the media were almost completely ignored. Only bits and pieces of the opinions that the Critics of the legislations had were shown on air, because the legislations directly profited the media.

Newspapers can actually refuse to run commentary they don’t agree with as well. Black Press owns over 95 newspapers in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and other places outside of Canada. If the owner of these newspapers disagreed with new laws that were passed that could change lives, they could not print it. That is complete corporate censorship.

Religious Censorship has been an issue that has been occurring as far back as you can flip any text book. Far back in ancient times Sorcery books worth 50,000 silver were burnt by Paul’s converts at Ephesus. They have tried to completely eliminate an entire religion all together with the Holocaust! The Da Vinci Code was attacked by various religious groups, saying that Dan Brown was a Satanist and was going to hell. The movie was even banned in Samoa.

Everyone knows who Harry Potter is, the FICTIONAL orphan boy that learns he is a wizard and goes to a school for wizards. Religious groups want to ban these books from being sold, and these movies from being seen. Some Catholic followers believe that Harry Potter glamorizes Wicca, a religion involving the thought that magic can be created by “Manipulating through the form of Witchcraft or Sorcery”, but at no time is the religion advertised during the books nor movies.

If this is not evidence that censorship is occurring more than anyone would have thought, take a look at China.

Though blocks to certain websites may not apply to different cities, and they have been lifted for certain occasions, they are still BLOCKING websites. Their most recent major website was access to The New York Times which was blocked on December 20, 2008. Most foreign websites are still available for mainland China, but a few websites such as the Chinese-language service of BBC continue to be blocked and unblocked. Regardless of the small number of blocked sites, the mere fact that the government is starting to block off sites that have no reason to disappear is enough to raise suspicion.

The Golden Shield project ( Also referred too as The Great Firewall Of China ) was created and is owned by the Ministry of Public Security of the People’s Republic of China. It was created in 1998 and was actually used In the beginning of 2003.

The Golden Shield Project’s job is to block Content on the internet. It does this by stopping IP addresses from being routed through and is made up of standard firewalls and proxy servers at the Internet gateways. The system also selectively engages in DNS poisoning when particular sites are requested. The government does not appear to be methodically examining Internet content, because it is technically impractical.

The Censored Content includes but is not limited too:

*Websites that are about or are related to the Falun Gong spiritual
practice, which is not only internet censorship but religious as well.

*News Sources that cover topics such as: Police Brutality, Freedom of Speech or Democracy

*The Chinese Wikipedia which has been recently unblocked

*Any major Newspaper and television media that contain information on the Taiwanese Independence.

*Sites that are linked with the Dalai Lama and his involvement with the International Tibet Independence Movement

You appear to be talking more about specific issues that may be affected by censorship, rather than censorship itself. You appear to be taking strong position regarding a few specific issues.

It would be far more effective to state some of the different types of censorship, and then to give one case study. This allows you to focus on the concept of censorship, as opposed to be arguing for a cause.

Wire Fraud? Bought out of state from craigslist but paid locally?

Long story made short: I jumped for something off of craigslist in Oregon, made the payment by direct deposite into their bank account in my local branch here in California. I went to Oregon to get the item but it wasn’t what was advertised and I didn’t take possession. Of course, even though they promised a refund ‘after we resell the item’, there’s no money being sent my way. Besides an out of state small claims court action (*sigh*) is there any chance of there being wire fraud involved? The ad was from Oregon over the internet, phone calls and payment were made in California.

Please – no lectures about making bad business decisions. Been there and done that to myself already.

admin answers:

1. Depends on the amount of money we are talking.

2. You could call your bank, and request to stop payment that the purchase was misleading in some way. They bank does not have to honor your request. They may tell you it’s a y.p. (your problem) and you will have to sue in OR if you want to try and get your money back.
